Re: Swiss Grading System When I was at university in Australia, to get a 'High Distinction' you not only needed extremely high grades, you had to be significantly above the rest of the students, and the lecturer had to 'show cause' - as in, support the grade and justify it to the administration/head of school. The ECTS uses a rank-based grading system. Sometimes, finer grained systems are used with steps of one-tenth.
Quarter steps are usually used in exams to indicate grades between integer grades: e.g., 5.25.
I can assure you it doesn't take an over achiever to get 5.0's or higher in Switzerland. In such a “grading-on-the-curve" system, a student’s grading is determined in comparison with the whole group’s performance.

St Gallen may make this conversion, but it still doesn't mean they're the same, and certainly won't be the same across the country. ECTS grades are assigned among students in such a way that the best 10% of the students with a pass grade receive an A, the next 25% a B, etc.
Public school costs are free and are funded by high tax rates. Which has ended up with them getting 6.5 or even a 7...

In Switzerland, it’s the 26 cantons – not the federal government – who are responsible for their compulsory education system. Often my kids have got a 6 with less than 100% - sometimes the teachers define a 6 as getting 80% of the questions right for example.
Grades in Switzerland are typically on a six-point scale with six being the highest possible grade.

I've found on my tests it's more important here to show that you've acquired knowledge, over being able to regurgitate the answer as back in NA.
