The gardens are unique among all the Oxford colleges in being landscaped in the naturalistic manner, formed at a time when the late ‘picturesque’ strand of the landscape garden was giving way to the more decorative approach, with shrubberies, of the Regency period. The gardens, grounds and playing fields of Worcester College cover approximately 12 hectares. The college was founded in 1714 on a medieval site. The society purchased Tower Hill Farm in Boylston in 1986 and has been building a beautiful year-round botanic garden on its 132 acres ever since. About Illyrian Gardens. Wade Hutcheson, my Extension colleague in Spalding county, gets plenty of calls from the citizens of his area asking his help in identifying various holes in their landscapes. The buildings are diverse, especially in the main quadrangle: looking down into the main quadrangle from the entrance through the main building, to the right is an imposing eighteenth century building in the neo-classical style; and to the left a row of medieval buildings known as "the cottages", which are among the oldest residential buildings in Oxford. It’s easy to see why as they are hardy, reliable, no faff plants that can flower for months on end; for these reasons we grow many in Worcester. As another year draws to an end and the college closes its doors for the customary Christmas break, it is also time to bring the Worcester College Gardener's blog to an end.
