I purchased this book for use in my homeschool study unit on space for my four boys (aged 4 - 10). I suspect that I'm not the only one to have taken a liking to Chris Hadfield after his performance of 'Space Oddity'.

It starts from the author’s childhood, mentioning the reason behind his dream of becoming an astronaut and the efforts that he took to realize it. Obviously, it does not cover every single aspect and detail of an astronaut's life or the process of becoming one, however, it is a good starting ground. He was CAPCOM for twenty-five shuttle launches and served as Director of NASA Operations in Star City, Russia from 2001-2003, Chief of Robotics at the Johnson Space Center in Houston from 2003-2006, and Chief of International Space Station Operations from 2006-2008. A wonderful look at the career of Chris Hadfield and how he worked his way to commanding the International Space Station from his beginnings as a kid from Southern Ontario. This book is a very enjoyable read and gives a decent insight of certain key life aspects and challenges an astronaut encounters during his life. During this time he has broken into a Space Station with a Swiss army knife, disposed of a live snake while piloting a plane, been temporarily blinded while clinging to the exterior of an orbiting spacecraft, and become a YouTube sensation with his performance of David Bowie's 'Space Oddity' in space. Chris is a Canadian national icon and this book is worth the price. Colonel Chris Hadfield has spent decades training as an astronaut and has logged nearly 4,000 hours in space.
